What Are My Rights As A Taxi Cab Rider?

By Paul McDuffy
Jul 2, 2009
Riding in a taxicab is something that people in cities are most accustomed to. However, when someone from the country, or a town that does not have taxicabs takes a ride in one there is some confusion over what they should do, or what their rights are. Many people love the convenience of riding in a taxi cab without having to have the hassle of driving in city traffic, and trying to find parking close to their destination. If you are not familiar with a city, a taxi is a real necessity. There are a lot of taxi companies in the country, and some of the oldest are the Chicago taxi services. Most taxi services pride themselves on the comfort of their rides and in being able to get their patrons to their destinations safely. But, that doesn't mean the entire responsibility rest on the driver. Taxi passengers have rights too, and can be reassured that they ride in comfort.

Many taxi riders don't realize that they have rights, but the reality is, is that there are several that are basic to their overall rider. The first right is the most basic of all rights. Passengers have the right to a very safe and comfortable ride. They should be able to feel comfortable and that the taxi you are in has passed all city safety codes and is mechanically sound. Most cities have very stringent codes when it comes to the cab fleets within their city and are constantly monitoring them.

Another basic right, but not one that is commonly known, is that you do have the right to choose your own route that the taxi takes to the destination. Most of the time, but not all, the taxi driver does know the best, and quickest route, to your destination. However, if you want to take a different route, or want to take a scenic drive, you do have the option to override the driver.

Some other basic rights are that you have the freedom to certain comforts. If you are too hot, you can request the air conditioner to be turned on. The opposite is also true in that you can request heat when you are cold. You can request certain radio stations, and even to be left alone when you are not in a talkative mood. Knowing these rights will certainly help you enjoy your next taxicab ride.
