Getting Rich Scientifically

By Will Edwards
Jul 2, 2009
Wallace D Wattles' classic work The Science of Getting Rich had quite an effect on me immediately after my very first reading. I can only describe what happened as a kind of attitude change, but that transformation, I believe, is absolutely critical for anyone interested in how to become rich. So in changing my attitude, I realised that I had indeed made the first move toward becoming wealthy.

It was difficult to disagree with the powerful argument of the author to the effect that the causes of wealth are not those that people normally associate with getting rich. For example, your level of education, access to opportunities or even the social circles you move within. In fact, the book begins with a comprehensive demolition of such erroneous thinking.

After dealing with the matter of what things are not the causes of wealth, he goes on to make a strong case for his main proposition that the real cause of wealth is the way things are done; and not what is being done. Doing things in the right way, he says, is what is responsible for the generation of riches.

Anyone, he says, who can learn to do things in this certain way can become rich - what a promise that is! However, in his explanation of how to do things in the certain way that always produces results, there are a few things he only lightly touches-on. For example, he never says that you need to be in business for yourself, but it is heavily implied.

You should give everyone more in use-value than you take from them in cash-value, he says; and, from that statement, we can immediately see that he is implying you should be in business. The principle is essentially that of continually exceeding your customer's expectations.

It doesn't take much thinking to conclude that, to become rich, you need to be in business. This is simply because whatever you do for a living - your job - has a market-value; and that's what you are being paid. You will never be paid more than your market-value because it does not make economic sense for your employer to do so.

However, when you are working for yourself, there is no reason your earnings should stop at a particular level. Once you know how to create wealth, you can keep doing it. And with the internet in its present state of evolution, there has never been a better time for people to start their own business because, on the web, it is so very affordable and such low risk.

The Science of Getting Rich was written, in my opinion, for the age of the internet. Of course, Wattles didn't do that deliberately, but still, his teachings translate very well to the world of the internet. There really is nothing standing in the way of the average person applying this thinking and changing their lives for good.
