Vampire Weekend Tickets - Vampire Weekend Readies Sophomore Album
One of the breakthrough acts of 2008, indie rock quartet Vampire Weekend is working on the follow-up to its self-titled debut. While the indie darlings could have had their pick of studios in glamorous locations across the globe, the former Columbia University students decided to hole up in Treefort Studios in Brooklyn to work on their sophomore album, the site in which the group recorded part of Vampire Weekend when they were an unknown act.
Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig told MTV News, "We thought a little bit about going to other places. The idea was floated of recording in L.A., but ... because everything is done within the band, it's kind of important for us to have our own space. And this is definitely 'our' space. There's nothing around here. No restaurants, nothing. And that's a double-edged sword, because on one hand, we think it keeps us focused, but on the other, when you're really hungry, the only place you can go quickly is McDonald's. So, when you're in here, you stay for awhile. You stay for a long time."
Vampire Weekend is one of those bands that has been a staple on the underground scene for so long that they were practically old news when the mainstream music scene discovered the band's preppy-tinged indie rock. Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Rostam Batmanglij and Chris Tomson formed Vampire Weekend in 2006-taking their name from a student film created by Koenig during his freshman year at Columbia-and self-released their EPs due to requests from students who liked the band's unique sound. After recording songs in a Columbia dorm room and at a family farm, the band got serious in the summer of 2007, embarking on a proper tour and signing a recording contract with XL Records that fall. The tour was a success, with Vampire Weekend tickets becoming a hot commodity despite the group not having released a proper album yet.
After releasing its XL Records debut in the form of The Mansard Roof EP, demos of Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut leaked on the Internet, and then the album arrived in its entirety. The self-described "Upper West Side Soweto" sound of Vampire Weekend struck a chord with music fans and led to high-profile gigs at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California and San Francisco's Outside Lands and also had fans wanting more from the band. The quartet has been crafting their sophomore album since February and recently let MTV News into the studio to sample two tracks that will appear on the band's forthcoming record: "White Sky" and "Taxi Cab." Vampire Weekend debuted "White Sky" at the album release party for their first album and also played the song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in March.
When describing the album, Koenig told MTV News, "One thing that's interesting about this album is that, to me, I think it has a wider range of feelings and tempos than the first album. There are faster songs than what you've heard-or what at least feels like our fastest song we've ever made-and also [the] slowest [song] we've ever made. There are songs where I'm singing very high, and I think also the lowest I've ever sang on a VW album-I tend to use a certain range-and so those ones [you heard], I don't think even show the extremes of vibe on this album."
