Mens Fashion - The Best Shirts and Ties For Businessmen

By Hendrik Pohl
Jul 2, 2009
In men's fashion, the shirt and tie are the gold standard for office wear. It's the combination that will never go wrong, no matter where you are in the world. But like most people, you probably don't have money to burn on so many shirts and ties. It's time you learned which shirts and ties you should have in your closet to make sure you're always stylish at the office.

Stripes and Solids
Regardless of color, there's no such thing as 'too many' solid shirts. Have at least three each of classic colors like white, sky blue, light pink and pastel yellow. Greens and oranges are also a good idea, but never really necessary. The important thing to remember is get as light a shade of the color as you can find. Light enough colors are practically neutral, so they won't clash with too many of your ties.

Solids are equally important in the male wardrobe, so you can never have enough of those either. If you have enough cash for just one, get a shirt with a simple black background and blue pinstripes. It's the classic combination that you can pair with just about any other item in your closet. Otherwise, any color of pinstripes or chalkstripes on a white background are just as versatile.

Neckties You Need
Unless you want to look like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, ties are an essential part of your workday outfit. If you've already practiced matching ties to shirts, you'd know that not every necktie can go with any shirt. Some combinations are better than others, so there's got to be a tie for each kind of shirt in your wardrobe.

Start things off with a simple solid tie in black or navy. Either color will go with virtually any other color of shirt on the planet, so they're a must-have for any guy. While you're at it, get a tie in a deep, dark color like maroon or dark olive. More casual than black and navy, the depth of the shade maintains a level of formality that will make it work with a suit.

Although they were just a trend a few seasons ago, knit ties are still a good buy right now. Get one in black or navy, as the texture will make the tie visually interesting despite the boring color. Just make sure that you wear it for either casual Fridays or those casual dinners outside the office. Knit ties are being widely accepted, but they're still nowhere near formal.

Once you've got a little leeway in your budget, get yourself some striped ties. They're not as crucial to your wardrobe because a solid tie could do the trick, but a regimental necktie gives a kick to your outfit that no solid color tie could provide. As always, stick to classic colors like blue or red so that you could pair each tie with as many shirts as possible.

Mixing and matching neckties and shirts is the trick to make a tiny wardrobe seem voluminous. The secret to doing it well is having all the right components outlined above.
