How To Get Rid Of Love Handles

Love handles (sometimes also known as "muffin tops") are often viewed as a problem area for the many men and women who have them. They arise, like any overly fatty area in the body, from over-eating and drinking, and not enough exercise. The anatomic term for the muscles that lie below the fat of the love handles is the "obliques" and many people will recommend oblique exercises as the key to a leaner waist.

To get you started with some plain truth on your path to a leaner body, let me start by stating a physiological fact: there is no such thing as successful spot reduction of fat. Exercising particular muscles tightens those muscles but does not burn fat from that area specifically.

That means one can only reduce or remove those love handles by the removal or fat and flab from all areas of your anatomy. Because love handles are caused by an excessive intake of calories it goes without saying that to reduce them one would only have to reduce daily calorie intake and everything will (eventually) be fine.

However, those who have attempted this seemingly simple task of "dieting" know that it is far easier to preach than practise! So why is dieting such a daunting task for most? Well, what you should take into account when you start a diet program is that you are about to embark on not just a simple task of changing a few foods around - you are also about to attempt to change a "lifetime's eating habit". How easy or difficult it is to modify this habit can be directly related to the extent and length of time that you have been eating badly

For many, changing a lifetime's eating habit can be just as difficult - or more! - than kicking a nicotine addiction. I use this analogy sadly because I have seen more people successfully give up smoking than I have witnessed lose the flab permanently. But that doesn't mean that weight loss is impossible! By carefully reading the next few sentences you'll have a much greater chance of success in your quest for a slimmer body.

The prime reason for a high failure rate in dieting is this: most dieters (full of enthusiasm at the beginning) make the fatal error of embarking on a far too severe weight-loss program which is just too uncomfortable to maintain for the time it takes to safely shed those pounds.

The answer of course is to follow a regime that is easy to maintain but will still get rid of the overall excess weight - and, naturally, get rid of those love handles into the bargain!
