Ways to Lessen Your Carbon Footprint

Many of us have concerns about the world's environment and wonder what we can do to help. However most of us still wish to enjoy the convenience of our modern lifestyles. One thing we can all do is be aware of our carbon footprints and aim to be carbon neutral.

Your carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide that you produce by burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels like coal, gas and petrol are used to provide transport, electricity, heating and many other essentials of modern life.

The release of carbon dioxide into the Earth's atmosphere is believed to be a major cause of global warming. There are lots of different ways we can help to prevent pollution and global warming by reducing and offsetting our carbon emissions.

Carbon offsetting means compensating for our production of carbon dioxide by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or looking for ways to avoid carbon emissions. Methods for offsetting carbon emissions can vary greatly, from planting trees to supporting renewable sources of energy production like wind and solar power.

You may not be able to completely avoid using fossil fuels, but we can all reduce our carbon footprint by making a few changes to the way we travel. By walking or using a bike instead of using a car we not only reduce carbon emissions, but also enjoy the health benefits that come from regular exercise. For longer journeys we can use public transport like buses and trains. If we can reduce the number of vehicles on our roads, then we can cut our carbon emissions.

There are lots of ways homes and businesses can cut down on carbon emissions. By turning down our thermostats, we use less fuel, and we can stop heat from escaping by ensuring that our homes are properly insulated. Using the economy setting on your washing machine and dishwasher is another easy way to use less energy and reach the target of becoming carbon neutral.

You may be surprised at the range of environmentally friendly products on the market. From car insurance companies offering carbon offsetting packages to large energy providers like British Gas offering carbon neutral, dual fuel tariffs, modern businesses are taking carbon emissions seriously. These products offer you an easy way of reducing your carbon footprint without compromising your lifestyle.

To find out more about how to reduce your carbon footprint, look online for advice and environmentally friendly products. Remember that even small changes can make a difference to the environment.
