RC Model Airplanes - Learning How To Pilot One With Ease

By Paul Mancini
Jul 3, 2009
Radio control planes make an interesting hobby for a lot of people. These miniature airplanes are able to conduct complex maneuvers in the air, not unlike their full-sized counterparts. Many of these aircraft can be flown in a large garden or at the local park.

RC model airplanes come in a whole variety of styles. Many of them are even modeled on the design of full-sized planes. In recent years special RC planes have been produced to mimic jet fighters. Some are light in weight while others are heavier - with heavier models usually requiring more skill to fly them properly.

Though smaller than their real counterparts, remote controlled model aircraft can perform many of the functions of their big brothers. They are controlled by radio and are sold with instructions on how to fly them.

It is quite easy to fly radio control model airplanes. You can learn some excellent tips from clubs, magazines and books. Another place to start the process of learning how to fly model aircraft is through the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The AMA can provide you with numerous tutorials on how to fly various types of remote control planes. They also outline more advanced flying techniques, such as the tricks that will blow away your family and friends, and bring more enjoyment to your new pastime. The Academy also publishes a weekly magazine to help you stay on top of the latest RC plane information. Another large benefit from membership with the Academy is that you get insurance with your subscription, along with updates on RC model planes events throughout the country.

If you would like to learn more about flying radio controlled model aircraft on your own, you'll first need to get acquainted with the parts of the particular aircraft.

The fuselage is the main body of the aircraft. It is the part to which everything else attaches. The wings provide the lift that the aircraft needs to fly. They could be found at the sides of the aircraft. The elevators control the elevation or altitude. By manipulating them you can make the aircraft go up or down. The ailerons will cause the plane to roll over. They are located on both wings. The rudder will control direction of the plane depending on the direction in which they are pulled.

You should also know that there are 4 types of forces that act on the RC model plane - the lift that keeps the craft afloat, gravity that wants to pull it back to earth, thrust that pushes it ahead, and drag that reduces the speed of the airplane.

You're probably wondering which plane is the easiest to begin flying with? We'd suggest starting with those marked 'Ready to Fly'. These airplanes come as the complete model with pre-installed radio, and are literally 'ready to fly'.

As a beginner, it is best to start with electric powered aircraft. They quite simple to operate, and all you need is to charge the radio and aircraft for a flight. Once they are discharged you simply recharge for your next flight. If you're intent on flying in a smaller place you should consider 'mini' versions of the same models - these are very tiny and can easily take off and land in smaller areas. These ones can also fly at ultra low altitudes and are very suitable for enclosed spaces.
