Mainenance Costs: Auto Repair Tools for Much Less
If you have a maintenance issue, such as an oil change, brake pad replacement, or burned-out light, why not save money and do it yourself? There are many "how-to" online tutorials and printed books that can show you step-by-step. The advantage to getting it done yourself is that you only have to pay for the parts; no labor costs are involved. Repair facilities usually mark up auto parts significantly, plus, it can cost $65 or more per hour to have their employees do the work. If you are uneasy about fixing your own vehicle, ask your family or friends if they can help you out or consider taking your car to a college campus to have supervised students do the work. Many friends and family are glad to help out and can be paid for their time with a six-pack or a pizza lunch; student training facilities can cut the costs in half for you.

Additional non-major repairs that require a little more skill can still be accomplished by yourself. Take, for example, resurfacing rotors, figuring out what an engine code means, or replacing spark plugs. Local auto parts stores often provide certain specialized help with issues like this for much less than the dealers. Diagnosing engine codes can be especially frustrating. In some states, you can go to a local parts store and they will diagnose the problem. However, in some states they do not permit this, but the code-reading tool is inexpensive to purchase (approximately $200). If you went to the dealer every time, you'd spend about $100 each time you need to diagnose a problem. However, you can add this useful piece to your home auto repair tools and it will pay for itself with only 2 uses!
Basic Maintenance and Car Care Don't Have to Break the Bank
Resurfacing rotors can be tricky because they have to have enough "meat" on them in order to be resurfaced. A specific range of rotor metal in millimeters must be met to remain at a nominal depth. Don't worry, however, because the resurfacing shops will tell you on the spot if they meet the thickness requirements. Additionally, they'll resurface them for you immediately because they have the special machinery required to do the job. Just as simple, you can buy spark plugs at the automotive care and supply store and the minimum gap is stated visibly on the package. If you need a gapping tool, they are available for under $5. You can also rotate your own tires by using a standard jack.
