Decorating Your Child's Personal Space

By Shirley Henderson
Jul 3, 2009
As children become more aware of the various interior design possibilities their desire to have an active role in the look of their room increases. Parents have also played a role in the growing popularity of decorating children's rooms because it allows them another room in the house to vent their creative furor on. Sometimes it allows them a place to experiment with design options they wouldn't feel comfortable with in other parts of their home, perhaps a particularly bold splash of color or an interesting painting technique.

Personalization in the form of monograms, custom throw pillows and framed art is currently a very popular trend in kids' room decor. Children can personalize furniture in their room by putting their name on items such as chest of drawers, study desk and closet doors. Framed art can be based on a subject that the child is passionate about or be some of the child's own artwork that is framed. This can also help to ensure that some cherished piece of art is not lost in the mass of school papers and projects that float around in most homes. Children should be included in the design process to the extent possible. Allowing them to choose the color of certain items or choosing a specific item like a ceiling fan or a lamp will make them feel they are truly a part of the process.

Another nice thing that framed art can do is to teach children about the world around them. A large framed world map, a globe, or framed pictures of places they have traveled to, on vacation or in school, not only make excellent decoration but also spark the imagination. Personalized wall art can also be a unique way to commemorate special events in a child's life. Usually sporting events are what first come to mind in this regard. A medal, a first home run bat or ball, a jersey, a pair of swim goggles, these kinds of items can be combined in a creative and professional manner to create a lasting memento and a stylish piece of wall art.

Your child can also pick a color for their room. The most popular colors for girls right now are pink and purple or white. For boys, the most popular colors are brown and greens. You can color coordinate the bedding and curtains to match the color your child chose. If your child's bed has space underneath you can use that for their toy storage.

You want to always add a rug to your child's bedroom. This will be comfortable for your child if they are lounging on the floor or walking barefoot. You can get the area rugs in all different colors and textures so you can find the one that matches your child the most. If you want to save money and purchase everything they want for their room try looking on Ebay. You can save so much money on Ebay compared to department stores with just a few things to choose from.
