Decorating Small Spaces
If you live in a small dorm room or tiny apartment you may feel like the walls are closing in on you at times. A simple redecorating plan may change that completely and save you a lot of space to make your room look larger.
Wall art can immediately create a large look in your room. If you add too many small pieces of art on the wall it will make your room feel crowded. If you have interior doors try replacing them with decorative curtains. Curtains have several benefits; it gives you privacy in a room and it doesn't take up any space like interior doors do. If you area bachelor you may want to consider downsizing your refrigerator from a full size to an apartment size that goes under the counter. This will not only give you extra room in your kitchen but it will also reduce your electric bill.
Track lighting is another important decorating feature in small areas. Using track lighting can make a room feel larger. You can also point each individual light in the direction you wish to highlight. You can place track lighting in closets, above the kitchen counter, a corner in the living room, or down the hall way displaying your art pictures.
In today's world everything is electronic. What do you do with it all? Try coming up with a storage unit that is beautifully designed. You can store your electronic gear and keep your room looking clean and tidy. If you have tons of CD's you may want to purchase an MP3 player and transfer all your songs over to the MP3. It will hold tons of songs and you can make some money selling your CD collection.
When purchasing furniture consider something that can fold up or is stackable. There are tables and chairs, or ottomans, sofas and more that can be personalized by the size. Also use one large mirror on the largest wall in the room. You can buy a mirror already in a frame or you can place it in a frame yourself.
Don't forget to incorporate an area rug into your space. Area rugs offer small spaces an easy way to insert character into a room. You can use an area rug as a focal point or just as a complement to your existing focal point. Choose a bright color if you want your area rug to really grab the attention in your small space. If you want to make the rug blend into your current decor, choose a color that is neutral and soft.
Just because your apartment is as small as a prison cell doesn't mean it needs to look like one. Take control of your small space and give it your own unique personality. In a few quick and simple steps you can turn your hole-in-the wall into a stylish and comfortable living space.
