How to Lookup an Individual's Criminal Record

By Andrea McCormick
Jul 4, 2009
Criminal records are a good source of information for protecting you and your family from questionable people you are in contact with. With a criminal record, you can find out if someone you spend time around may harm you, your family, your property, or your income.

Are you even allowed to look up someone's criminal court history? Why yes, you are. Because criminal court records are public records, they are free for anyone to view.

You can even check the court records for someone you plant to hire as a babysitter while you and your spouse are away for work, in fact this is encouraged. You wouldnt want to hire someone who has a questionable criminal record, including things like theft, kidnapping, and child abuse to look after your children.

You could also search the criminal record of a new neighbor to put your mind at ease.

Getting the records are completely legal as long as you dont use the records for criminal or harmful purposes, such as blackmailing the person. It is under the Freedom of Information Act and is state that it is completely ok to use the information for safeguarding yourself and your interests.

Finding criminal court records can be difficult even if obtaining them is perfectly legal. Records are help where the case was originally tried, not where a person currently lives. So, if you look up someone in South Carolina, your search may come back with nothing, because that person only committed crimes in New Jersey.

These are some of the things to keep in mind when you decide to pull up someone's criminal record.
