Fish Mounting Hints
Just got back from a fishing trip and planning to mount the one that didn't get away? Remember your trip forever by getting your fish mounted. Following a few tips will help you get the most for your money.
First, have a fish taxidermist in mind before you set out. Look for a specialist in fish taxidermy since this is a difficult field. You want somebody with lots of experience making beautiful trophies. Check out examples of the taxidermist's work. Make sure you think it's beautiful -- your trophy will last a long time. This is a great time to talk to your taxidermist about the different types of mounts available and the prices of the various kinds of mounts.
Second, before you go on your fishing trip, plan for your trophy. You'll want to take a photo of your fish after you catch it, so bring a camera. The picture will help your taxidermist match the natural colors of the fish. Pliers will help you get the hook out easily. You don't want to mar the fish since any blemishes could show up in the final mount. Finally, take ice and plastic to pack your fish in. Water will make the colors fade faster, so wrap the fish in plastic before you pack it in ice.
Finally, put some thought into how you'll mount your fish before you bring it in. Do you want to put your fish on the coffee table or on a mantle? Do you want a small mount or a larger one with a plaque? Thinking about these questions before you bring your fish in will make things easier. Talk to your taxidermist to get the best advice. Good luck!
