Facts to Consider Before Purchasing a Workbench

Thinking about investing in a new workbench? Well, there are a number of key points to consider before spending your money. Here is a brief list of things you need to consider.

1 Sturdy and Strong

First and foremost, all workbenches need to be strong and sturdy. The top needs to be thick and strong enough to withstand various physical abuses and also heavy enough so that it will not move or vibrate, but at the same time the whole bench design does not want to be so heavy that it cannot be lifted.

2 Folding and wall-mountable

When space is at a premium a fold-away bench is vital. The folding mechanism should be simple to work without the danger of catching your fingers. Obviously the weight of the bench needs to be light enough to lift above head height.

3 Detachable pockets for tools

If you use an array of tools and you are away from your usual workplace, then its very handy indeed to have detachable pockets that fix onto the workbench but do not get in the way of your work. This way, no more wandering around trying to find that tool that you only put down 5 minutes previously, somewhere

4 Workbench Mobility

We have touched upon the weight of the bench but how about having wheels to provide that added dimension of mobile convenience. No need to break your back each time you want to move the workbench around. Ideally the wheels should be easy to engage, such as just by tipping one end of the bench a few degrees, thus engaging the wheels. On the other hand, there should be no chance of the wheels engaging while in the resting position.

5 Height Adjustable

Who really wants a standard height work bench? Not only could you be 6ft 6in tall but the type of work you normally do on the bench may require you to work at different levels. It makes real sense then to have a workbench that can be height adjusted conveniently.

6 Uneven Surfaces

If you often work on uneven surfaces, its important to have a workbench that compensates to continue to provide stability.

7 Keeping Within Your Budget

Once you have a good idea as to what you will need, it becomes easier to work out a target budget. Its worth keeping in mind potential future uses of the workbench so you do not have to buy something else due to an oversight you made earlier in your choice.

8 Vices

Very often a workbench goes hand in hand with at least one vice. Would the workbench you require benefit from having the choice of a range of vice attachments? There are now workbenches that come with a variety of vices for all forms of jobs. Its a good facility to take advantage of when the time comes.
