Make Your Small Bathroom Bigger: Decorate The Right Way
Most bathrooms are not designed as a room where much leisure time is spent. Many bathrooms are downright small and basically, uncomfortable little rooms. If closet is more the word you would use to describe your bathroom, a little imagination and planning can make your bathroom look larger.
The following are simple decorating techniques you can apply to make your rather space-challenged bathroom look as grand as a spacious bathroom:
Maximize the use of mirrors. Mirrors create the illusion of a bigger area, as well as reflect light, thus making a space look brighter. Have a large mirror in the bathroom. Ideal place is behind the bathroom sink.
Nothing makes a small area seem smaller than clutter. Cut the clutter to make the bathroom more attractive in general. Instead of hanging numerous towels, at most hang one pair in a light tone coordinated with the color(s) of the bathroom. Rather than displaying many small artistic pieces, select only one. Avoid using numerous small accessories, stick to just one. Whatever you do not need, stash it out of sight. Ridding the room of clutter will instantly make it appear more spacious.
If your small bathroom has visual obstructions such as a frosted glass shower or bath door, replace it with clear glass. Better yet, get rid of the glass door and use a shower curtain that can be left open when the shower is not in use. By getting rid of visual obstruction, your eyes will be able to see the back wall rather than vision being blocked by an obstruction that makes the room appear smaller than it really is.
Next, create an illusion of a bigger space by using the right lighting. Dim light may be all soft and warm but if not adjusted properly, it can make your small bathroom look even smaller.
Choose light colors as they make a room look bigger. Additionally, light colors make a space more soothing. A pastel or neutral tone can add a comfortable ambiance.
One decor that you shouldn't miss is the area rug. The lack of accessories won't be a problem with a piece of fabric on the floor to highlight the entire space. A light-colored area rug will help in making the bathroom look more spacious but if you prefer contrast, you can use an area rug with a rich color like red, brown or turquoise.
In choosing an area rug, go for one made of chenille or cotton. These materials dry easily, which makes them ideal for bathroom use. You would want a rug that is quick-dry to avoid accumulation of mold. Don't use a woven fiber rug as this takes a while to dry and is not an easy maintenance material.
