Through the seasons, you should always take a strong personal interest in your oral health. Health issues, and in particular gum disease can be better managed when you maintain a daily regimen of brushing and flossing.

Gum disease, easily put is a disease of the gums and bone. Medically it is known as Periodontal Disease " pronounced as per-ee-oh-don-tul disease. When your gums are inflamed this is known as gingivitis. Bone loss is known as periodontitis " which usually involves the bones in the upper and lower jaw. Gums which bleed easily are red, or swollen during or after your routine of brushing and flossing are a sure sign that you have gum disease.

Gum disease may be caused by a build-up of plaque " the same kind of plaque which can clog your arteries, is a sticky invisible layer where germs form naturally. The plaque contains bacteria which in turn give off toxins. The bacterial toxins irritate and damage the gum and bone supporting your teeth.

Gum disease comes with specific warning signs such as:

Your major arsenal in fighting and preventing gum disease is the good old tooth brush and floss. When you use your tooth brush and floss daily, and as frequently as needed, you will reduce your exposure to the risk of gum disease.

In addition to your toothbrush and floss, some individuals have added a rubber tipped stimulator, tongue scraper and interproximal brush to their oral arsenal. Interproximal brushes are the tiny brushes used to clean between teeth.

Your complete body system is impacted by the destruction brought on with gum disease.

Along with regular routine flossing and brushing, visiting your dental clinic for regularly scheduled cleanings, you can reverse your gum disease. The severity or risk of gum disease can be altered by a lifestyle change:
