Money does not seem to go as far as it used to. These recessionary times are really affecting a monthly budget and it is difficult to remember the good days. The utility bill is one of the biggest challenges and account holders often dread opening the envelope or logging into their account each month. Before your expenses get the better of you, take some time to learn how you can reduce utility bills.

One of the first places to start, when you are considering how to reduce utility bills, is your air-conditioning unit and/or heat furnace. In hotter climates, the air-conditioning unit accounts for the lion's share of a typical home utility bill, whilst in more temperate climes the furnace can really work overtime during the cooler months and add considerably to the annual tally. Make sure that the unit has been serviced recently, pipes are being cleared of any debris or mold accumulation and that you replace the filters regularly for optimum efficiency.

Check to see if your utility company will actually help you to reduce utility bills. Sometimes providers have a special power saving program that they will allow you to enroll in. Such a program will allow them to interrupt your service for a very brief period if they are experiencing periods of heavy demand elsewhere. In this case, a monthly credit can be issued to your account just for taking part.

It is in the best interests of the utility company to help you to reduce your bill, so call them and ask them if they would send an expert out to analyze your usage. He or she should be able to find some good ways to save.

Warm air rises and can escape through a badly insulated loft. If you looking for a good way to reduce utility bills, add insulation up there. Whilst looking for places that air can escape, check around all your windows and doors for leaks.

Reduce utility bills the easy way by changing all your bulbs. It has been shown that Energy Star compliant bulbs are as much as 75% more efficient than conventional ones. When you leave a room, turn off all the lights, and remove plugs from appliances and computers.

It is not necessary to run your dishwasher everyday and you can save consumption of water and help reduce utility bills by running your washer every other day or even less frequently. It is okay to reuse glasses during the day without re-washing each one and you can even wash some items by hand for a change.

By far one of the better ways to reduce utility bills in an older house is to install a draft snake around windows or door draft stoppers in the doorways. As older houses settle, tiny gaps can appear under and around doors and windows. Most of the time it is far more cost effective to simply place the door snake or flexible draft stopper in the problem area.
