The History of Mothers Day

By Andrew Gibson
Jul 7, 2009
Often we feel that our Mothers are often not given due importance, round the year though they fulfill our needs and give us the best they can. In the honor of these sacrificing mothers, we dedicate them a special day, 'Mothers Day'. Mothers Day is celebrated around the world and different cultures celebrate it in different ways.

In Japan the history of Mothers Day is related to the birthday of the Empress of Kojun. She was the mother of Emperor of Akihito and is regarded as a special person. The entire affair began in the Showa Period and the tradition has transferred down each generation. Today the Japanese prefer to please their mothers with beautiful flowers, especially carnations and roses.

In Iran, Mothers Day can be traced back to the birthday of Hazrat Fatemeh Zahra. This is a special day in Iran and it is thus regarded as the day of honoring mothers and is celebrated as the Mothers Day. She was the daughter of Prophet Mohammad.

In Greece the Eastern Orthodox day of feast of Presentation of Jesus at the Temple is the day selected by Greeks to honor Mothers Day. This day is selected as the Mother of God and Theotokos is said to have appeared on this special feast. She was the one to bring Lord Jesus to The Temple of Jerusalem. As this feast has a strong connection with the mother of Christ, it is celebrated as the Mothers Day.

Chinese people place great importance in the significance of flowers such as carnations on this day. It is a common flower which can be easily found there. This occasion does not have a very sparkling history as it is said to have been initiated to help a cluster of unprivileged mothers of the Western Region of China. In the modern era, it is celebrated in the memory of mother of Meng Zi, known as Meng Mu. It is not regarded as an official festival in many of the small towns and villages.

The second Sunday in the month of May is celebrated as Mothers Day in Northern America and The United States. Mothers Day was celebrated after the American Civil War. It was a concept of one of the social activists known as Julia Ward Howe. It was just a noble action to unite the women power against the circumstances that arose.

However her attempt to unite women for peace failed, but Mothers Day got a formal recognition after this event. Celebrating Mothers Day here has no specific trend as people here get a huge variety of gifts to please their mothers with gifts, cards, flowers and chocolates.

In the United Kingdom another name for Mothers Day is Mothering Sunday. This day falls just three weeks prior to Easter, which means that it falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Its origin is seen somewhere around the 16th century in which it was a tradition to visit one's Mother Church at least once in a year.
