How To Buy A Patterned Tuxedo

By Victor Santerino

Right away, I am making the assumption that you are not a large man. Larger men should never wear anything patterned, because it only accentuates the body. Especially not a patterned tuxedo. Stick to a dark, or black tux which has a slimming effect, and if possible try to find a subtle pinstripe.

Four primary varieties of patterns exist. All the tuxes available are one of these four, or a subtle variation on one of these. The four main types are : solid, checked, pinstripe, and the windowpane. You'll need to make your personal choice based on your tastes and needs, and this includes the accessories you'll pair it with.

The vast majority of pinstripe tuxedos are worn by businesspeople, along with an unadorned white shirt and dark tie. Pinstripe tuxedos are not proper attire for social events.

The pinstripe pattern should be avoided by slim people because, as we all know, vertical stripes have a slimming effect. It is usually part of the "power suit" look.

The windowpane tuxedo has the appearance of small window panes due to the positioning of the pockets, lapels and buttons. The pattern is not printed onto the fabric, it's caused by the visual "lines" created by the positioning.

While a windowpane and a checked tuxedo may appear similar, they are different due to the fabric. In the checked tuxedo, the checks are actually part of the fabric, while in the windowpane they are not.

It can be incredibly difficult to match this style of pattern with a suitable shirt and tie. However, if you are the right physique, and you get the whole "look" matched up, the results can be excellent. Providing larger wearers stay away from bold patterns, and slim men avoid pinstripes there is little that can go terribly wrong.

If your physique doesn't match a particular style, steer well clear. You will be wearing it to important functions and will always be wanting to look your very best. It takes a little thought to successfully wear a patterned tuxedo. Always bear in mind never to accentuate any part of your face or frame that needs no emphasis.
