Several Tips and Simple Reminders That Can Help Prevent A Break In
How often have you left the back door open for the kids after school, or "just in case" someone forgets their key or someone has to get in or just forgotten because it is always unlocked. Talk about a lapse in home security. Nationwide, police statistics show that over 70% of home burglaries happen through unlocked doors - and that over 60% of us never lock our front doors. That means even the latest wireless home security systems, door alarms, and monitored burglar alarms will do absolutely nothing to protect your family and home if you do not lock your doors.
So, let us create a simple plan to make sure we get the doors locked and close the breach in your home security.
1. Lock outside doors whenever you close them - going in or out. It is just a habit, but it will improve your home security more than any other single thing you can do.
2. Make sure everyone that needs a key has one. This means all of the people who live in your house, a neighbor, (if you do not have a neighbor you trust enough to have a key, make friends with one. It will improve both of your home's security, and make you feel better.) A family member or friend who does not live in your home.
3. When someone says they lost a key, replace it then - DO NOT WAIT - especially when it is a child's key. Teaching the value of home security is vital and they need to be active partners.
4. If you do not have a single-key home, budget to get it first on your home improvements. Not having the same lock on all the doors makes it easier to leave one unlocked.
5. Install a dog door. Remember your pets are your second home security system. If you keep the door open or unlocked so they can get around, you just chose to disable the first one.
If you do not already have one, install a wireless home security system. They are easy to install, and will help you keep doors locked too. Specifically, it will help in two ways; first, when you are enabling a home security system it works as an automatic reminder that makes it harder to forget locking the door.
Second, most high-quality home security systems will automatically send a text to your cell phone confirming that you enabled the system, and allow you to enable the system from your home when your forget. This means you are protected, and have a fail-safe.
