Is Pet Adoption A Dream Come True Or Nightmare Waiting To Happen?
Are you ready to become a dog or cat owner? If you are, have you ever thought about adopting a pet and giving them a warm and loving home? Maybe you have her mixed feedback about adopting a pet from a shelter, which has given you a moment's hesitation about doing it. With all of this in mind, how to you know what you should do; how do you know what is right for you? The truth is that there are both advantages and disadvantages to adopting a pet. On a whole, people generally have reported positive experiences with pet adoption, though nothing is perfect. This is exactly why it is so important to what the benefits and setback to pet adoption.
The Pros: Many pets that have been adopted are known to be very loving towards their owners. Contrary to popular belief, pets do develop a certain level of emotional maturity. When an animal has been locked up in a shelter cage, it will develop a huge attachment to the master that has freed it from its confines. This leads to a very loving pet.
The cost of adopting a pet is far cheaper than what it would cost to purpose one from a breeder. A breeder can sometimes charge upwards of $1,000 or more for some breeds. When you visit a venue that offers pet adoptions, the costs are incredibly inexpensive. Some shelters will charge less than $30 and some shelters will offer pets completely for free.
If you are not sure about what kind of dog it is that you want, you may find that an adoption shelter has plenty of variety in a one stop shopping experience. Unlike breeders, which usually specialize in only one breed of dog, adoption centers carry all sorts of dogs in different shapes, sizes, colors, ages, and breeds. As a result, you are sure to find the kind of dog that you really want.
The Cons: Many animals that visit animal shelters are lost pets. As such, the shelter may have to guess the pets actual age. Because of this it is possible to adopt a pet that is much older than you initially were led to believe. Now, an older animal can be a wonderful pet. However, the life expectancy of the pet will be less than what you assumed.
You do not know the genetic history of the pet. Thankfully, shelters will perform complete examinations on the animal so the odds of the animal being sick when you purchase it will be extremely low. However, the genetics of the animal may lead it to develop an illness later in life.
Bad habits often come with pets that are older, just as they do in people that are older! Adoption shelters also get quite a few older pets, so you could end up with a pet that has quite a few bad habits that will be difficult to break. These could potentially be difficult to deal with as well.
There are a plethora of other factors that you should consider when choosing a pet; these were just a few. However, no matter what it is that you decide to do, make sure that you take your time and think about what will be best for you because ultimately what you decide will be best for the pet.
