Saving Money on Your Electric Bill

By Phillip Dye
Jul 13, 2009
Although it seemed we were getting a short reprieve, energy costs are on their way back up again. As they go up, most of us are trying our best to find ways to lower our energy costs This includes our electric bills as well.

Simultaneously, many people are also looking for ways to help the environment. Good news: You can do both. You can be friendly to the environment while saving on electricity and lowering your electric bill.

Here are some suggestions to consider.

First, don't ignore the obvious ways of saving on energy use in your home. For example, remember to turn off the lights when you're not in a room. This alone could save you hundreds of watts each day, and is a real money saver.

Also on the subject of lights, think about what lights you really need on. Do you really need every lamp and an overhead light on in the living room? Or would a single lamp do?

Here's another easy suggestion: In the warm months, raise your thermostat when your air conditioning is running. Likewise, during the cooler months, if your heat is on, lower the thermostat.

By being moderate in your use of the AC and heat, you will save much money on electricity. In fact, one study says that each degree you turn up or down the thermostat creates as much as three percent in energy cost. Probably you'll never even notice these few degrees, but your utility bill will. And so will the environment.

Now let's discuss some helpful devices you might want to consider using around the home. For instance, get rid of those old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs and replace them with the environmentally friendly compact fluorescent bulbs you've seen.

True, they cost more than the old bulbs, but they last a lot longer. They can last 10 or 12 times as long as a standard bulb, saving you energy and money in the process. Within a year, these bulbs will pay for themselves easily.

A second device that will save you power is called the PowerSave 122. This device will lower your utility bills by lowering how much power is wasted by your home appliances. For instance, many appliances, like freezers, air conditioners, washers, dryers, and vacuums use inductive motors.

These ask for electrical power from the transformer each time they have to run. This creates heat in the wiring and motors and is essentially wasted energy.

However, the PowerSave 1200 stores electricity in the home, releasing it to the motors when they're ready to be run. This eliminates a lot of heat in the wires and motors, thus reducing electricity bill totals by as much as 25 percent.

A third important device is an electronic thermostat. Most of us have left home and forgotten to turn the thermostat up or down. An electronic model, though, can be programmed to change the temperature by itself.

These are some easy steps anyone can take to lower their energy use. Your billfold will appreciate it, and do will the environment.
