Taking a Quick Look At Roman Architecture

The buildings and edifices that were put up by the ancient Romans were structures that have in many ways withstood the test of time and the descendants of these buildings gave a great deal to the way that many of our buildings and structures appear today. What is important about this style and what makes it stand out?

When looking at Roman architecture, you will find that it was originally adopted from Greek architecture. By the time of the late Republic, however, the Romans had created their own highly remarkable style and upon examination, you will also discover that the Etruscans had an important hand in contributing to Roman design. One innovation that the Romans brought to the mix was the creation of cement, which would affect the way that their city went up and what happened in it.

One of the most notable aspects of Roman architecture was the use of the vault and the arch. With an extremely sound understanding of the materials that they were using and the mathematics involved, the openings that were so common in Rome gave the city a tall and very open feeling. Many people feel that one of the most important contributes made by the Romans to architecture was the Triumphal Arch, a symbol of power on earth that transcended the ancient Roman ideals to find a place in the Christian basilicas. The Triumphant Arch today can be seen in the aqueducts of Rome; the durability has been such that they continue to impress even a thousand years later.

Another key feature in ancient Roman architecture was the creation of the multi-story apartment blocks, once known as insulae. These apartments were intended for large amounts of people to live in them and could be several stories in height. Though they were fairly dangerous places that were prone to fire, they were still an important factor in the way that the city of Rome grew up and out and found its place as a truly cosmopolitan city, both in the ancient world and in ours.

When you want to see Roman architecture first hand, why not actually head to Rome? Of course, the best way to see the architecture is to stay in it, so why not consider staying in a holiday apartment? A holiday apartment will give you peace and privacy that a hotel cannot offer, and you ll be able to enjoy your own kitchen and your own entertaining areas!
