Outdoor Heater - How to Find the Right One

Aug 17, 2007
If you live in a place where winter comes early and stays for a long time, consider getting an outdoor heater. There is no reason why you should stay inside half of the year. See what types of outdoor patio heaters exist and how one can improve your home.

No wonder that outdoor patio heaters are gaining great popularity as outdoor accessories. With a patio heater, you can enjoy the outdoors in autumn and early spring, rather than retreat into your centrally-heated home. And it doesn't only bring warmth - there's always something magical about gathering around an open fire. That is partially the reason why fireplaces are so popular. So sitting on your patio, looking at the flames of a patio heater can be very enjoyable too.

Choosing the right outdoor heater

Outdoor heaters come in a variety of styles, designs and can use different source of fuel. You can create a built-in patio heater that is built into the patio itself as an in-ground fire pit. Fuel such as wood, charcoal and pellets are used in these heaters. Many heaters are built out of ceramic or brick and can have different styles.

Round, pot-belly stove shaped, or square heaters are the most common among these free-standing patio heaters. This type of heater has a "pit" area where the fuel is burned and a ventilation hole on top.

You can use a variety of wood fuel. Cut cordwood creates hotter temperature and burns longer, while pellets burn cleaner, with less smoke. Outdoor heaters can be very decorative, so you should look for a heater that will not only provide warmth, but complement your patio design.

Gas outdoor heaters - convenient option

Another popular variety is an umbrella type propane or natural gas outdoor heater. This type has several advantages. First, you don't have to worry about wood supply. Second, gas heater is much easier to clean. And, third, it is vertical, so your heater won't take much room on your patio. Gas patio heaters are recommended for people who plan to use their heater often, and don't want to do too much maintenance on it.

The prices of outdoor patio heaters vary greatly, depending on the size of your heater and type of fuel. You can always find a heater that your family can afford. When buying a patio heater think about how big the aria you need to heat up and how often you are going to use your heater. If winters are mild in your aria, that it is possible that you will use your heater all winter. While in really cold climates an outside heater can only work in October- November and then again in spring. This information will help the sales clerk to suggest the right type of heater for your needs.

With the right maintenance an outdoor heater will last you for many years. It will bring you many happy relaxing moments outside, when otherwise you would have stayed indoors.
