Early Adopters Demand Trends

By Jane Dawson
Jul 16, 2009
As a savvy online retailer you always need to be looking towards the future, not just at today's situation. One good way to think about your next move is to track the behavior of those buyers that are considered to be early adopters. This is an especially important concept in the area of electronics.

What is an early adopter?

An early adopter is someone who jumps onto new products and technologies in the early stages of their availability. They are sometimes associated with what many call a fad, a new idea or concept that may or may not have staying power. In fact, the underlying meaning of a fad is something that fades away over time.

If enough early adopters find that they like a product well enough, they turn a fad into a trend, a something, product, idea, way of doing business, that becomes popular with the mainstream for an extended period of time.

People who act as early adopters revel in the idea of being different. They want to stand out, they want to take risks, and they want to be in the know about their areas of interest. These are the people that adopt the beta version of software even though there is a risk of crashing their computer or spending money on a product that simply does not work the way it is supposed to. They usually have the money to buy products when they are new and costs are high, before volume buying and competition drive the price down to the level where followers join in.

If early adopters are going to drive a fad and make it into a trend, they need followers who will jump on the bandwagon and swell the ranks of people accepting an idea or product and making it popular.

Latest Information on Early Adopters

Hitwise, one of the leading Internet data intelligence gathering resources, has identified a group of Australian early adopters of electronics that they call Young Ambition and Asia Pacific analyst Sandra Hanchard recently reported her findings on their up and coming preferences. She noted that the most popular searches among this group are:

Mobile phones
Iphone accessories
Headphones
Nokia 6300
Lg web slider
Navman
Tom tom
Omnia
Electronics
Mobile phone reviews
Nintendo Wii
g kf300
Acer laptop
Web slider
Cameras
Iphone
Tom tom gps
Laptops

As you can see, mobile phone remain a key item in the early adopter array of necessities with several other brands competing heavily with the iphone. There is also a lot of activity around accessories that is worth noting if you are in the business or can get into the business of phone accessories. Games also play into this group's life, a phenomenon that has also been seen throughout Canada and France. This is another important piece of information for retailers who are looking to move into other product lines or looking for keywords that might be compatible with their product lines.

Even though these results are from one country's subgroup of early movers and shakers and we know that there can be wide country by country variations, it is a great data set if you sell to Australians and a good piece of comparative information if your marketplace is elsewhere among the industrialized countries.
