Are you planning on improving your home exterior? Asking for professionals on doing it for you would be expensive. So, why don't you do it yourself? It is much cheaper and you only need three basic materials: brush, garden hose, and power washer. Thus to help you, here are five simple guidelines on how you can improve your sidewalk or driveway as well as how you can protect your concrete from weathering.

One, you'll need a power washer. You can rent it if you don't have one. Power washer can be rented in your local tool rental center and home improvement center. It is available either in an electric or gasoline powered design. It uses garden hose as a water supply and delivers a stream of pressurized water to clean your concrete.

Second, clean your concrete from dust and debris and wet it. You can use cleaning product to remove grease, oil and dirt. Follow the procedure written at the back of the cleaning product. Some cleaning products can help in bleaching and brightening the look of your concrete. And also ask professional contractors on what cleaning and maintenance product to apply that goes well with your concrete.

If you have stubborn stains, here are some tips on how to remove it. First is to spread a thick layer of sawdust or kitty litter over the grease or oil, respectively. Putting sawdust and kitty litter helps absorb the grease or oil on your concrete. Second, let it sit for a day or two and then gently sweep the sawdust or kitty litter. After that, put some dry cement on the dried grease spot and let it sit again for a day or two. And lastly, slowly sweep the dried cement and throw it away.

For rust stain, you can use oxalic acid containing products. ZUD cleaning product has oxalic acid and trying this would be the mildest approach. To remove the rust stain, wet the rusty spot and sprinkle it with ZUD. And then, spray the area until the ZUD gets wet. Let the ZUD stay for a few minutes then brush it. Repeat the procedure until the stains are completely removed.

Three, use a long handled scrub brush to maximize the cleaning capability of the cleaning product. Four, try rinsing your concrete using a power washer. Power washer is an easy and most effective way to clean and maintain your concrete. Remember that you need to remove all chemical solutions on your concrete. Five, let the concrete dry.

Concrete usually get dirty in a day. To maintain your concrete you should keep it clean and sealed regularly. So, even if you didn't notice your concrete are dirty you should clean it once a year. You can also seal your concrete to prevent it from additional damage. Cleaning and resealing it depends on the conditions of your concrete. So, if it is always expose to sunlight and vehicle traffic, then it should be clean and sealed on a regular basis.
