Diamonds - Or Cubic Zirconia

By Derek Dashwood

Cubic zirconia is the finest simulation to a diamond so far discovered, and even an expereinced jeweler has been mistaken. These cubic zirconia are often replaced for diamonds when viewing diamonds by, say an elegant looking couple. The couple make the exchange while viewing diamonds, and the switch is not relized until after they have left the store. Cubic zirconia is almost as brilliant as a diamond and has even greater fire. Thi can make up for the lack of brilliance in the zirconia, which is also very hard which gives it very good durability and wearability.

Cubic zirconia is also being produced now in fancy colors, such as red, green and yellow. Such can offer you a fine diamond alternative as a way to enjoy something of fire and brilliance in your stone. Alway you want to make sure you know what you are getting into, is this a diamond of cubic zirconia. Have the jeweler show you the difference. Even if you plan to purchase over the internet you can check out local jewelry shops and ask to see the difference between diamonds and cubic zirconia. It is no shame to wear cubic zirconia as long as you didn't think you were purchasing a true diamond.

Go to a jewelers store. You might want to check out softer stones but such as sapphire that you still much admire, look at amethyst or sapphire rings dressed up with diamonds. Make sure you check on whether they are in fact diamonds or cubic zirconia. Actually, if you plan to wear your jewelry every day cubic zirconia (CZ) in a setting makes sense, and gives you an affordable luxury. Again, as long as you know that is what you are asking for. Some of the tewts that you can do to check on whether your stone is a diamond or cubic zirconia; if it is a loose stone, have it weighed.

You can do this at a jewelers shop, as they have equipment that weighs for that difference.A CZ is approximately 75 percent heavier than a diamond of the same spread. You also want to look at the girdle, or the side of the stone. If there is frosting on the girdle or middle of the stone, a subdued color less white than a diamond will indicate your stone is a CZ. Another way is to test the stone with a carbide scriber. These can pbe purchased at jewelry supplies houses and cost less than $20. A diamond can only be scratched by another diamond, but this carbid scribers can cratch the CZ, but not the diamond.

Take care about doing this test in a jewelry store, especially if the jeweler did not represent the stone as a diamond. You also want to study the stone, mounted or losse for fluorescence, which is in both diamonds and CZ, but in different intensities. Once a jeweler shows you the differences, you can make use of your new knowledge, with caution. You can pocket sized electronic diamond testers, for less than $200. This hand held device can tell you whether you are holding a true diamond or not. You have some instructions to learn,, but soon you should be in a testing mode.

A new synthetic diamond created a sensation when it first appeared, as it fooled existing lab equipment and some experts. Synthetic Moisanite is a new diamond imitation being sold today in the name of moissanite, which is not natural, but created in laboratories. It is silicon carbide, and advertisements for it have described it as one of nature's new found minerals, but it is grown in a lab. But synthetic moissanite did fool most expeerts and it made news when it first came out. Many felt this was the edge of testing abillities, but it was not.

Now many tests have successfully been discovered to note the difference between synthetic moissanite and a real diamond, iincluding of the optical magnifying lens, the loupe with its power of magnification limited to the power of ten. If you have conducted these tests yourself, and you still have doubts then take your stone to a reputable jeweler or gemologist. The is also a new lab esting device that can also distinquish diamonds from CZ Also, diamonds weigh more that CZ, so a simple weight test between same spread stones can tell the difference, if any. Moissanite is very hard, and can be useful for everyday wear, even in a setting with rubies and sapphires.

If you can navigate these there should be enjoyment for you for years to come, once you have found your ideal, and honest diamond.
