By Julie Landry
Jul 21, 2009
Identity theft is something that just happens to other people, and not to you, right? Nothing could be further from the truth, especially if one is not being more careful than ever with your personal information. Your identity can actually be compromised before you are even aware of it, and if you do not keep close tabs on your finances, your reputation and credit score can be ruined before you are even aware of it.

There has been a large increase in these types of scams in recent years. Millions of people all over the world -- in the United States, the UK and elsewhere - have been affected, leading to a huge number of victims, running into the millions. The cost of these activities amounts to an overall loss of several billion dollars in America alone.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes these days. With over 90 million, in the US alone, exposed to the hazards of identity theft, it is alarming to see the depth of the problem still unresolved. A lot of people live in fear that one of these days they will get victimized by these predators.

Two of the most common identity theft scams are crimes that happen on the internet. These crimes called phishing and spoofing which make use of email to try to get personal information. Most often the email will pretend to be an institution that you may have an account with like a bank or investment company. Even eBay has all kinds of criminals posing as it in emails to try to get your account information.

If you access your bank account online or pay credit cards online, change your passwords monthly and use a combination of small and capital letters, numbers, and unique characters with your password. Also, if you are banking online don't let your computer stay idle for a long time on your bank account. Get your banking business done, log out, and exit the website. Better yet, close the page after you complete the task.

Always keep your personal details and data secure. Don't carry data around with you that you do not need. Ensure that all personal documentation and identification data is shredded or burned and never give your personal details out over to the phone to somebody that you don't know.

What's the best way to get true identity protection? The best way to get true identity protection is through a service that uses a multi-pronged approach. This involves credit monitoring that looks for signs of potential fraud and identity monitoring that screens public records and national databases for identity thieves that are using your name and social security number.

When you are looking at companies that offer to protect your identity, be sure to look beyond just the cost of the service. For a business, the cost is probably a tax write-off, but even if not, compare the cost of the service against the losses you would sustain without it. Then be sure you are clear on exactly what is covered and what is not, and what your limits of liability are.
