Free Vs. Paid Web Hosting Services

Everyone loves something for nothing "free," but when it comes to showing your website to the world, you must review your options carefully with free vs. paid web hosting services.

Many think that the only difference in between free vs. paid is that you don't pay anything, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Choosing web hosting services is a big part of your business since this will be the company that displays your website, blog, etc. across the web. All web hosting services are not created equal; choosing the wrong one could mean the difference in your website being seen or not.

Before choosing a web hosting provider you need to determine what you will require for your website hosting needs. First, you need to determine what type of website you have - small business, informational, products, etc. For instance, if you have a small business, you may require a few pages - About, Services, Cost, and Testimonials. However, if you have a products site, you may require multiple pages to display the products, which requires more space.

Another consideration is the type of content you will have on your website - articles, videos, music, flash - all of these play a part again, in the amount of space you will require. A single page website may be suitable for an informational site, while your small business may sell multiple products requiring many pages and extra features such as shopping carts, payment processing, etc.

Once you have an idea of how much space you will need, it's time to start shopping for your web hosting services. You will come across many free web hosting packages and they are very appealing. Many offer free website building tools which allow you to create a website without any HTML knowledge. They also have widgets and added features that make building your own website a breeze, but before you jump at what seems like a great deal, you have to think about the drawbacks.

Free hosting packages typically only allow limited space and bandwidth. This might be great for a beginner with no prior experience, but you must think about down the road. If your business grows, will you be able to upgrade, and if so is there a set up charge to switch to the paid version of your free hosting package? Another big drawback is normally free hosting providers will add an extension on your domain name, using their business name. For a visitor this may give the impression that you're not serious about your business, even though you are 100% committed.

If you have an informational site, it may not be such a big deal, at least in the beginning, but as soon as you're able, you may want to invest in a domain name without the addition of your hosting provider's name.
When searching for a paid hosting provider, you don't have to worry about the name extension, but you do have to inquire about technical support, downtime, the number of emails available, as well as the type of control panel. You want to be able to make changes when needed, and some of the control panels can be difficult to manage.

Overall, when it comes to web hosting services, you want to be sure that the company you use will be able to offer you superb service, minimal downtime, and help when needed. Take the time now to consider your options it could save you from headaches down the road.
