Encouragement On Taking Time Off

By Will Smith
Jul 23, 2009
The best thing about working is usually, ironically, taking time off. Imagine yourself submitting your request for a vacation and having it to look forward to. It seems like work is a little more enjoyable knowing that you'll be taking time off soon for some reason. It feels like having to work on Friday, and counting the minutes until it's the weekend.

However, many employees find that it creates stress to leave work behind. 71% of employees surveyed said that they stress about taking a vacation and that the first day back at work is the most stressful thing. A growing number of workers face anxiety when they think about all the work they will be confronted with once they return from vacation.

Often this concern will stay with them for the length of the vacation. The benefits of taking time off can be dampened by the realization that all of your work will be waiting for you when you return. Keeping up with email, voice mail and other duties seems overwhelming these days.

What do you do to make sure your time off is calm and uneventful so you feel relaxed when you return. Here are some tips to make the time that you take off is good.

Before taking time off, make sure you are not leaving any loose ends. Be sure someone steps in to fill your shoes while you're out. Have you arranged for somebody to perform you work in your absence? If you are responsible for overseeing clients, who is the main contact going to be? In addition, someone must be the leader when it's time to question your subordinates.

When such issues crop up, they make you draw out strategies to ensure that things are done, without your physical presence. You do not have to worry what is going on in the office, if you have a solid plan in place when you are on vacation.

When your return to work, you'll want to get back into your work routine as seamlessly as possible. You feel like you haven't missed a thing, this is best accomplished through setting up some processes within the first few hours of being back.

When you come back from vacation, talk to the person that you handed off your responsibilities to and get a summary from them. The summary just requires to include items that would directly affect you in the future. Over the following week, you get to any outstanding items.

Sit down, take a deep breath and open your email. You will have lots of emails to filter through, if you are like most people. Begin by searching for names or email titles that you know are important. First, take care of those, and then go on to the others. Setting realistic goals for catching up on your email quickly is a good idea. If you pretend you are playing a game, the speed which it can happen is amazing.

Everyone needs a day off now and then in order to stay healthy and sane. Have fun on your vacation and keep the worry of work at work!
