Build a Website without the Mistakes
Do you know what people really look for in a website? It might not be what you think. Sure, a pretty design and some great graphics are nice, but things like that aren't on the top of the list when it comes to priorities when you build a website. The most important factor is usability.
Usability is a catch-all term that refers to things like text readability, navigation and structure. You know, the real "nuts and bolts" of the site--how it actually works.
It's an area where even some very attractive sites get a failing grade, however. That's unfortunate, because mistakes that adversely impact the usability of the site will invariably undercut the site's value. You can have an award-winning design, but you're not going to get results if the site is littered with mistakes.
People don't want error messages when they click on your links. They won't bother to dig around your site in hopes of finding your poorly presented navigational system. They won't strain their eyes trying to read content that bleeds out of its area over a sidebar. If you want a top performer, you need to build a website without those mistakes.
Building a flawless site should be your number on priority. You might be wondering, though, how to get the job done. Is there a magic, one-click solution to all of those issues?
Unfortunately, there isn't. There are, however, a few things you can do to produce eminently usable sites that steer clear of performance-killing blunders.
First, manual testing is a must. When you've completed your site, you need to give it a complete run-through. Look at the pages carefully. Use your menus and navigational tools to make sure they work correctly.
Second, outside opinions are a giant help. Find out what others think. Get a few reactions from objective critics who can point out any flaws or annoyances. This can help you to see things that you may have missed.
Third, build a website in a manner consistent with recognized usability standards. Do your homework and learn about what makes a good site tick, then closely follow those guidelines.
Fourth, use the right tools. This isn't 1995. You don't need to hand-code your pages in HTML anymore. The laborious process of manual site building is often the source of detrimental mistakes. Instead, find a quality site building tool that will aid you in the proper design and construction of your site.
Fifth, be willing to adjust. You may have to make changes after you initially build a website to get it to an appropriate level of quality. Don't resist those changes, embrace them. You'll be a lot happier with the results when you're managing a mistake-free site.
If you follow those five steps, you'll soon have a website upon which you can rely as a cornerstone of your online business. It will outperform other sites and will improve your results substantially over an error-riddled alternative.
