Tips on Selecting a Business Coach

Aug 17, 2007
Coaching is a rapidly growing profession, with its roots in personal effectiveness however, business coaching is a new phenomenon. A good business coach has a background in business, along with an extensive training in all business areas. Business coaches with a good performance apply an assortment of tools that can help them to deal with a number of business challenges.

If you are a small business owner, executive or entrepreneur, then you need to follow certain business strategy tips that will help you select a true performance business coach.

. Identification of measurable business goals- Try to identify the measurable business goals of the coaches. An effective business coach will begin with the end in mind and work through the establishment of the truly measurable desired results. These goals need to be aligned to your strategic planning. You need to remember that if you cannot measure the goals then effective management is also out of reach.

. Following a disciplined and result driven coach selection process- Since coaching is a process, it needs to be result focused and disciplined. Even the coach should reflect some disciplined approach when it comes to the coaching process. Coaches who are not disciplined can never deliver any results.

. Adoption of a performance mindset- Performance is not similar to learning, as it is an application of knowledge and not mere acquisition of the same. The opportunities that are present within the coaching process should be present there all the time, in order to apply what has been learnt and to make necessary course corrections. You need to remember that any form of improved performance begins within the mind.

. Always check the results- It is good to check the results obtained from the past and existing clients, including the rewards or intangible benefits. Any coach with a true performance should be able to submit measurable testimonials freely. Just remember that the past proven success stories of others are a good indicator of your potential success in the future.

. Conduct research- Remember that certification or credentials should never be beyond the achieved results or experiences. There is a prevalent belief within the United States and other technology driven countries that certification or credentials is better than any practical experience. You need to remember that a coach who is result focused is the bottom lien in the process of selection.

. Ask for a complimentary hour of coaching- Business, executive or corporate coaches should always be willing to provide up to one hour of complimentary coaching to the clients. This will be helpful in determining how the coach can use a result approach and your comfort level with him. Even though coaching is based on results, you need to believe that a particular coach can provide you with the insight to acknowledge your improved performance.

You need to recognize that coaching is just a strategy for securing measurable results and that you should be committed in order to make any significant changes. If you as a client want the coaching to be successful, then you should be committed to make significant changes. Always keep in mind that result focused coaching includes proven strategies and tools, but you need to take things seriously in order to make it work for you.
