Learning The Game Of Politics At Work

By Will Smith
Jul 29, 2009
We all know that office politics just means that there will be biases in the workplace. Many see a power outside of our range of control and that at times we must submit to this power.

With the politics at work, here are a few examples. You need to learn to deal with the prejudice of competitor-boss relationship so you can successfully receive the job you are aiming for. Are you familiar with a circumstance such as this?

You can see a type of promotion for you when you are employed for six months and you want to take on a better position at your job. Being fully qualified for the job, you send your resume to Human Resources.

To your amazement you land an interview. Even though every other applicants shares your skill sets you feel you smashed the interview. Office politics can sometimes override your chance of being hired. Those that share the same passions or viewpoints as your boss may be picked over you. Doesn't that suck?

Politics at work is something you will be dealing with regardless of the company size. It is my understanding that one has two options. You start by playing the game, becoming a so-called friend to everyone in the office, knowing that this charade is your only hope to advance. The idea itself is pleasurable and should be enjoyed. However most people find it emotionally draining to fake relationships, or feign enjoyment of activities they dislike.

Alternately, you could be so good at your job that the company cannot afford to lose you. This demands nearly the same effort as faking company/co-worker relationships with supervisors. Participation in politics at work, however, is possible only via one of these two choices.

I advise the second, performing your job so well that politics at work can't impact you. The value of your work becomes so imperative that you have influence over the outcome of the business. Remarkably, this aspect results in your automatically achieving the aforementioned first alternative too.

Determining if you want to play the game, is an important task of making politics at work end for your benefit. You will have to play the politics at the work game if you want to succeed in the corporate world. You will be able to determine which path to follow. You can make a champion and overcoming politics at work you can bring the longest term value and influence.
