Snowmobile Buyer's Guide: Everything You Should Know Before You Buy
Buying a snowmobile is a serious undertaking! It can be a significant investment and if you don't know what to look for, you're in for a giant headache. This buyer's guide will provide everything you need to know before you buy. Whether you're a seasoned expert or just getting started, the following will be beneficial to you.
It doesn't matter if you're buying your first or your fourth snowmobile. You have to know what you're looking for and what questions to ask so you don't end up making a decision you'll regret later. There are so many things to consider -- affordability, new or used, maintenance, etc. Of course you want to get the best deal, too, and you can get all of the answers by asking the right questions.
Now, if you are buying a new snowmobile, the process is pretty straightforward, especially if you have gone through it before. The questions are simple. What does it do? How is it different from this other model? How much weight can it pull or hold? What kinds of safety measures does it feature?
One of the most difficult things you'll have to decide on is which model to buy. The easiest way to tackle this challenge is to ask around. However, you shouldn't ask the salesman. Remember that they are there to sell to you and they probably work on commission so that isn't really the best person to ask. Instead, ask your friends or other snowmobile owners what they prefer. Do some research online to see what other people are saying about the types of models available and which ones are best for your budget and needs.
Don't buy the first snowmobile you see that fits your budget. Of course you're excited and you want to get out there in the snow, but it's best to take your time, shop around, and do your homework. If this is your first snowmobile purchase, bring someone with you, preferably a friend who has bought one before, and they will help you look it over. Helpful resources are available -- use them!
Also, before you buy a new snowmobile you should look it over. Yes, you expect it to be in perfect condition, but it still may have defects or damage from shipping or test driving. Oh, and make sure it comes with a warranty! You'll be glad you took the time to do this if something ever goes wrong.
Ok, if you're buying a used model, things are a little different. You will need to inspect it thoroughly and take it for a test drive. Again, you should definitely bring a friend who owns a snowmobile and knows what to look for. You'll want to look for things like scratches, dents, cracks in the body. Check the fasteners to make sure everything is tight and nothing is loose. Make sure it's centered. You can do this by looking down the center of the sled from a few steps back. If it's tilted or out of alignment, it has probably been wrecked!
Look for different color paint, or paint that doesn't look like it was the original paint. Sometimes owners repaint their snowmobiles to cover scratches that were obtained during a crash. Does it have a lot of decals pasted on it? Make sure those decals aren't covering up cracks! You should basically treat this process the same way you would treat buying a used car -- go over ALL of the details!
Plus, you should ask the owner questions about how well the machine has been maintained. Ask for records if they are available. Ask them specifically if the snowmobile has been in any accidents. Ask if it has been raced -- racing puts a great deal of strain on the engine so the price should be much lower!
Also, if you have one available, bring a mechanic along. You can pay them a small fee (40 or 50 dollars) to look at the snowmobile and see if they can find any defects that you may have overlooked. It's a small price to pay to ensure that you're buying something that's worth what you're paying for it! The owner shouldn't have a problem with it and if they do, you know there's something wrong and you should look somewhere else! Good luck!
