Town Built Round a Busy Harbour

Aug 17, 2007
Kos Town, is the capital of Kos and is in the north east of the island, and has about 18,000 inhabitants. It is like much of Greece with a mixture of the old and new with modern architecture springing up in between more ancient buildings. It is built around a busy harbour which has been guarded since the 14th century by the Castle of the Knights of St John.

Kos Town is perfectly situated for taking boat trips to Turkey and the nearby islands

The towns beaches marks the start of a long trail of sand leading all the way south to the cape. The town has two beaches, the best is to the left of the harbour looking seaward and a mile from the town centre. Long and sandy with shade available and beach bars serving drinks and snacks. The other beach on the other side of the harbour is partially manmade.

In July and August, the town hosts the annual Hippocrates Festival. This festival includes cultural events such as modern and traditional dance recitals, performances of both ancient and contemporary Greek plays and concerts by local artists, and numerous art exhibitions.

The old town has some interesting boutiques, and the newer part of town contains many boutiques as well as jewellery shops. Kos town is the centre for most shopping. Local leather and wooden craft work can be found here.

Bar street is probably the most popular night life spot in the town although bars are scattered all around town. During the day the street is empty and there is virtually no life there. At night it gathers huge crowds of tourists. Beware of one thing usually what you get from a labelled bottle is not what you think. Fake branded alcohols are quite popular here.

To the right side of the harbour, is this the monument of the Venetian period. It was built by the Knights of St. John in the 15th. century. It has an inner and outer wall. It shows an interesting example of the architecture of the 15th. century. Kept within the Castle are many artefacts from ancient temples.

The north eastern part of the town, near the harbour lies the Ancient Town. You can see the ruins of a Hellenistic Temple dedicated to Hercules, restored pillars of a small Temple and remains of a sanctuary, dedicated to Aphrodite. At the entrance to the Ancient Town there is a great arcade STOA Kamara tou Forou.
