Second Largest City in Thailand

Chiang Mai is Thailand's second-largest city and the gateway to the country's north was founded in 1296. You can still see the moat that encircled the original city. Doi Suthep, topped by one of Thailand's holiest wars, rises behind the city, providing a fine views of the city

The city is surrounded by a ring of mountains. Chiang Mai has its own very distinctive culture, festivals, arts, and traditions as well as a mix of local, ethnic as well as expatriate communities from all over the world. It has over 300 temples and a quaint historical aura. It is also a modern, friendly, international city.

Kad Sum Murd, the Midnight Market, takes place in front of Kad Suan Keaw department store every Thursday to Saturday from 6 p.m it is lit up by candles.

The market of the Wisdom of Lanna Arts & Craftsmen Walking Street show art from 21 villages. The Yong, a popular group from the north show their famous elephant wood carvings, souvenirs, bamboo products, for drawing pictures on cloth, creating dolls made from cloth. The fair covers a distance of four kilometres.

Wualai Walking Street the famed old silver street sells silver products souvenirs, home decor is open every Saturday from 5 p.m. until late.

The citys popularity with travellers means there are plenty of night-time options to keep you entertained into the late hours, from theme pubs, bars, discos, and to live music. Crowds can be a lively mix of locals, backpackers and expats.

The night life in Chiang Mai is well known for its go go bars. These are located mostly along the western end of Loi Kroh Rd, and a stretch of Moon Muang Rd South of Tapae Gate. They are popular with some peolpe, these areas are well contained, more discreet and relatively tame than Bangkok.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep one of the most visited attraction in the capital is the temple on the hill top. There 290 steep stair to the top or you can take the funicular railway. Before leaving the temple area, look at the view of the Chiang Mai Basin.

Elephant Riding is one of Thailand's greatest treasures, the domesticated Asian elephant has worked with men since the early history of Siam. These gentle giants are an important symbol of the kingdom. Elephant training culture is strongest in parts of Isan and the far north.
