Aug 17, 2007
Rattan as a plant - Rattan furniture is traditionally created in Asia and mainly in the country of Indonesia where the majority of the rattan plants in the world is grown. The plant rattan is a type of palm. Rattan is very similar to the palm plant but it has a more slender stem, spiny areas near the base and the plant climbs therefore requiring support. Rattan is very easy to grow and it is mainly grown in forests. The plant does not take as long to grow as does most tropical wood. Rattan is generally used to make furniture such as those in the wicker style. Rattan is one of the oldest forms of material used in furniture making as well as in basket making and in the production of mats.

Wicker and furniture - Wicker is made with rattan, grasses and vines. These materials are woven in order to make the furniture required. This type of furniture became very popular during the Victorian times and it was then seen as clean and well designed. The field of wicker furniture has recently made a come back and it can be found in a variety of colours and available with cushions to make seating more comfortable. If you are thinking about buying rattan wicker furniture then you should choose models that are sturdy, appear durable, and have a strong frame. Rattan wicker furniture is available in a variety of options such as chairs, sofas, coffee tables, chaise lounge, and dining tables. You could furnish your whole house with wicker furniture if you wanted to. Wicker is mix and match able with a wide variety of furniture, it is an extremely versatile piece.

Caring for your wicker furniture - If you are thinking of placing your rattan wicker furniture outside then choose pieces that have been treated with resin or plastic, this will protect the materials used in production of the furniture from the sun and heat. Furniture that is weather treated will last much longer outdoors. Rattan wicker furniture should be wiped over and dusted regularly with a soft cloth. If you should happen to spill something onto the wicker then use a cloth slightly dampened with a mild soap and water. Wipe the wicker over regularly this way so as to avoid any discolouration, breakage and scratches. Do this every two to three and your wicker furniture will last much longer if well cared for.
