Exercises For Your Dog When Off The Leash

It is advised that you get your dog used to exercise when not on the leash when they are still young. By doing this your puppy will get used to being allowed to walk and run freely. You dog will also be stimulated a lot while being allowed to play a game of fetch or Frisbee when not on the leash. This article will give you some information on exercising your dog while they are off the leash.

There are a lot of dog owners that do not like their dogs to be off the leash, and some of the reasons are:
Dog will chase other animals. The majority of dog owners say that as soon as their dog is off the leash, they chase after whichever animal is in their sight. Chasing is a natural instinct for all dogs, and even higher in certain dog breeds. It is therefore vital that you train your dog from an early age onwards in order to avoid this type of behavior.

Dog will jump on other humans. Dogs that are naturally responsive and friendly might have this tendency seeing that they get so exited. This is something that can be corrected by proper socialization from an early age onwards.

Dog will run away. A lot of dog owners complain that their dogs will run after other animals or moving objects seeing that they are attracted to them, and this will cause them to get into trouble. This is true, but may be because your dog never gets the opportunity to run around freely and explore their neighborhood.

You will however be glad to know that there are several things that you can teach your dog to be more controlled when of the leash.

1. To begin with you should do start training the dog for off leash control at an early age. Try and do this in a secluded area that is safe before you just let your dog run around freely.

2. When you begin with the training, make use of a long leash so that your dog will be able to drag it with him to get the feeling of freedom.
3. Make sure that you do not have a tight grip on the leash, but just check your dog once in a while. If there is a crisis situation, you can always grip the leash tighter.

4. At all times make sure that you have some of the favorite treats of your dog on hand, and give them sufficient praise when they come back after being able to walk around freely. It is vital that you praise your dog every time they get this right.
5. Make sure that your have positive body language and a positive tone of voice when you speak to your dog during these sessions.

6. By no means should you pull on the collar of your dog when they return.
7. You should also walk your dog in the same area each time in order for you to let them of the leash, and give them some time to sniff around before you just let them go of the leash.
