Accessorize With Your Pocket Square

The ornamental pocket square, or pocket handkerchief, has a long history, having originated in England during the middle ages. They were made from different materials, for the purpose of absorbing moisture and if one was wealthy, they were made from silk.

Through time the handkerchief has been used and presented in many different ways to represent a multitude of different purposes. The archetypal British vacationer using the knotted handkerchief to complete his outfit consisting of suspenders and rolled up pants, while a white flag made of the handkerchief is a sign showing peace or a readiness for resolve, as well as being worn on the head of a judge ordering a death sentence in Hong Kong while under British rule. However, the handkerchief has fallen away in use and is now used only as an accessory to compliment a suit in the form of the pocket square.

Paper is these days used in preference to the handkerchief for hygiene purposes. This came about purely by accident when it was discovered that facial tissues were being used in place of the handkerchief.

When employ as a pocket square there are an assortment of method of folding a handkerchief to position in the breast pocket of a man's tuxedo. Each method produces a distinct result which can be selected to complement the circumstances.

Many different folds can be performed such as the presidential, the one, two, three, or four point folds, and the puff. All are different and are made to appear differently in the pocket of the wearer.

It is unusual to see a pocket-handkerchief worn to the office or a business meeting since a pocket square implies a formal setting. It is more often seen worn in black tie social events. Sometimes, to a board meeting for example, a pocket square might be worn appropriately.

Never wear a pocket square so that it is hanging out of the back pockets of your pants. This is a secret signal used in gay circles and the specifics of how it is folded communicate your predilection.

Any man wanting to wear a tuxedo is going to be in need of some type of personality enhancing effect. It doesn't have to be a pocket square, it can be in the form of a tie-pin, a cummerbund, or many other various accessories. However, a pocket square can be used alone or in conjunction with the other accessories to bring harmony to any suit.
