Sun And Sand Upon The Berlin Beach

By Gaizka Pujana

You might consider yourself to be a visitor on a sunny beach in San Pedro or let us say, the South of France. But a beach in Berlin? Where the only Sand Available is the one which is used in construction? And where one cannot imagine hearing the sea, unless it is in operatic music?

But well, the Berliners especially the artists, architects, politicians and punks have decided to use their creative imagination and have made a beach, where you can relax in the hot Berlin sun, sipping Moselle with a girl named Giselle, hot Berlin sand beneath your feet -

You are actually on the banks of The Spree, and you are in the best place to watch the lights of the German Parliament House, the Reichstag. Of course, you are enjoying yourself on a sunny evening at the beach. You have spent the whole day here, and now it is evening, and you are in the mood for a little bit of entertainment. Just pick your beach towel up, and walk into the nearest Strandbar, where you are going to down a chilled Pilsner with currywurst. Or you just might relax on your beach chair sipping a margarita, gazing at the muddy Spree and thinking sentimental thoughts. And if you happen to be feeling really energetic, you can join in the vigorous games of volleyball going on.

The nice thing about Berliners is that they do not have any deadline about when to stop using the beach like they do in America (Labor Day past, onset of unpredictable weather. So let us not go to the beach, shall we?). So it does not matter whether it is October. You want to enjoy the beach; you are going to do so. All the different strand bars spotting the beachfront are just an excuse for you to enjoy the vagaries of the unpredictable weather, so be ready for occasional nips of cold air or rain.

Oststrand, the East Beach is for the average Berliner, while the beach by the Reichstag is more up market. So enjoy your Mojita while watching the last remnant of the Berlin wall here.

It does not matter whether you have come to Berlin for business or for pleasure, the main purpose of your stay here, is to enjoy your visit. That is why it is quite a good and logical option to look for a holiday apartment, while you stay here. Not only are holiday apartments good value for money, but you can get self catering apartments, which mean that you have a home away from home. So, once in Berlin, look for a holiday apartment of your choice and rent it out for the duration of your stay!
