Drop Your Landline and Switch To VOIP

By Steven Donlin

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP also termed as IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband phone, Voice over broadband or broadband telephony is used for transmission of voice over IP network such as Internet.

The basic idea behind this technology is to convert analog signals into digital signals and then transmit the same over internet in form of data packets. The same process is reversed at the receiving end. A VoIP system uses a session control protocol to control the setup and tear-down the calls. An audio codec is used for encoding the speech such that it can be transmitted over an IP network as digital audio through an audio stream.

The Advantages and Benefits of Voip

Affordable

Price is one of the main benefits of switching to Voip. You pay a fixed monthly fee, but you are free to make unlimited calls to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. International rates are very low as well when compared to standard landlines.

Mobility

Mobility is a huge selling point of Voip service. Traditionally, cordless phones only work over a very small distance from the base station. Not true with Voip. You can make calls wherever there is a broadband connection. For instance, if you travel, you can bring your equipment with you and make calls using your same Voip plan and features.

Special Features

With VoIP, you get added benefits and extra features like call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, three-way calling, automatic call screening, and other location services with no extra cost. VoIP service providers bundle all these services with an unlimited calling plan.

No extra hardware

There is no special hardware to purchase in order to make calls with Voip. You simply use your existing internet connection and home network.

Other advanced features that may also be bundled in a plan are:

Account manager Call blocking Speed dial list Voice mailbox Customized ring tones

With VoIP, you get a secure connection to make calls that could not be found in land line phones.
