What are the Long Term Effects of Birth Control Pills on our Body
When birth control pills became popular with women in the early 1960's, a range of controversies started revolving around the long-run fallouts of hormonal birth control. Today, more than ever, it is important to consider the facts and health considerations involving the use of birth control pills in order to make an educated decision regarding the choice of birth control method.
Birth control through external means includes pills, injections, patches, implants placed permanently in tissue and contraceptive device such as a diaphragm or ring. Most birth control methods work in a similar fashion - forbidding the egg from undergoing maturation and evolving in the woman's ovaries. In the natural cycle of a woman, hormonal levels start to fall thus activating various biological process. Women who ingest birth control pills containing estrogen and progesterone, have an varying hormone level and due to the fluctuation, ovulation is prevented.
One study published in a medical journal revealed the link between the usage of birth control pills to sexual disturbances and dysfunctioning. The connection to sexual disturbances ranged from diminished sexual desire, lack of feeling in mutual sexual fondling prior to sexual intercourse, a fall in lubrication levels and increased sex-related physical distress. Minimized levels of androgenic hormone in women who are under the influence of oral contraceptives, may result in enhanced globulin levels, which can contribute towards sexual dysfunction.
Recent studies have indicated that the use of female steroid hormones is closely linked to an augmented risk of breast cancer, particularly in women over the age of 45. Moreover, women who have a family history of breast cancer may also stand at an increased risk of developing the disease if they have been taking birth control pills for a long period of time. It is believed that the longer the pill is utilized, the bigger the risk. However, there are a number of debates regarding breast cancer studies and its association with birth control pills.
Some medical experts are of the opinion that the use of birth control pills for a long duration can also cause various other negative side effects such as greater dangers of developing cervical cancer, clotting of the blood, sudden severe instances of abnormal heart function, sudden loss of consciousness, weight gain, abnormally high blood pressure, gall bladder disorders and severe recurring vascular headaches.
The extended consumption of synthetic hormones may also cause the body to lose crucial nutrients such as vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. Some women have described an increased frequency of depressive disorders while taking birth control pills.
