Health Insurance Plans For Specific Illness
If you cannot or do not want to get a complete health insurance plan, you can get one that gives your coverage only for a specific illness. In Spain, these health insurance plans are often bought by self-employed people.
If you are self-employed, the cost of disease and economic loss are higher and riskier than if you were employed with a company. This justifies the need for an affordable specific health insurance plan. These policies are beneficial for the insured because they cover all the costs regarding a specific disease plus all the expenses that it implies like: hospitalization, medicine, or temporary disability.
These health insurance plans work in a simple way. When the insurance holder falls ill, the insurance company guarantees a certain economic compensation already established in the policy. These funds will be used to compensate for loss of income while they have some kind of disease. For this reason, it is self-employed workers who demand this type of insurance the most.
If the patient needed surgery for the illness that he or she is covered for, the health insurance plan would cover for the surgery costs. Generally there are maximums and minimums of coverage and the policy may also establish a number of procedures that are covered by the health insurance plan. If the ensured needed more than one procedure at a time, the policy will cover a 100% of the most expensive procedure and 50% of the second most expensive one and so on. Often these policies establish a minimum and maximum number of days that a person can be hospitalized. Under normal circumstances, 360 days would be the maximum period for reasons other than surgery, for the latter the maximum is 120 days.
When you work at home or when you have your own business, these kinds of health insurance plans would give you an allowance in case of temporary total disability. You will be compensated, on the basis of your insurance contract for the number of days you are not able to work. This also applies during hospitalizations and it lasts until you are discharged from the hospital.
This specific type of insurance has a few restrictions that the users should be aware of. These restrictions are related to the diseases or conditions that are excluded and for which you would not be insured. We are talking about pathological and chronic diseases, pre-existing conditions, occupational accidents, mental illness, AIDS, epidemics or diseases caused by drug addiction or alcoholism.
