What is the relation between acupuncture and infertility? It is something worth investigating. To know about the relation between the two, it is first important to have an idea on acupuncture.

It is an integral part of Chinese tradition and is extensively practiced. It is an alternative and effective means of treatment that is practiced not only in China but in several other countries. President Nixon opened the doors to China in the year 1972 when a journalist from the New York Times, James Reston had an appendectomy performed with it used as the anesthetic. This incident definitely gave the due recognition to acupuncture in the United States where even brain surgery was later performed with the aid of it. Currently in America, there are around 8000 acupuncturists, 16 acupuncture schools and 2 medical schools. Under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Helms, UCLA medical school has been teaching it to aspiring physicians all over the world.

The effectiveness of acupuncture is limitless and in fact it can help in infertility as well. The problem of infertility, both in male and female patients, responds to it in a great way. It is also effective in a number of infertility related problems like PMS, amenorrhea, blocked fallopian tubes and others. As advocated by Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, along with the aid of herbal medications, it can cure infertility in many cases as it addresses the body as a whole and not any particular part or symptom. The core structure of acupuncture was developed by the Chinese Taoists more than 3000 years ago to help stimulate the flow of intrinsic energy within the body which in turn can revitalize the organs and their functions. It works by inserting sterilized acupuncture needles at appropriate points of acupressure. The aim is to release the blocked flow of energy so that the body can start its normal reproductive process.

There are a number of advantages in treating infertility by acupuncture in association with TCM or if need be, with the conventional treatment procedure include the following:

1. Minimizes the side effects and lowers toxicity from the invasive procedures and drug therapies.
2. It considers the patient as an integral mind and body organism, not merely treating the organs like ovary, fallopian tubes, uterus, semen volume or sperm count, etc. It aims at motivating the body's natural healing potential by treating the root cause of infertility or any other health problem.
3. It strengthens and balances the general health of the patient so that the procedures like IVF, ZIFT, AHT, GIFT, ICSI or TET can become easier and effective to achieve. As a result, the patient derives general health benefits and endocrine system balancing from specific acupuncture along with herbal supplements as added help. It makes the entire process of pregnancy easier and postnatal recuperation faster.
4. Acupuncture treats infertility in an effective way and it is a traditional health care system which can be applied with or without the involvement of Western medical procedure. The integration of Western medicine started in China for over a century and is termed as Integral Chinese Medicine or ITCM. Ancient Chinese medical technique of acupuncture and herbal dietary supplements or medications, when applied in the light of modern medical systems really works miracle.

Infertility in men and women can be best treated through the holistic treatment procedures which, like the Chinese method, address the person and not only the disease. It may involve in its treatment, changes in food habits and in lifestyle. Chinese medications, herbs and exercises involved in it too. Apart from curing infertility, the holistic way of treatment makes a person healthier both in mind and body.
