Should You Buy Health Insurance?

By Wade Henderson
Aug 16, 2009
Private health insurance is accessible to most users. The determining factors of getting health insurance are your finances and your health care needs. You can decide whether you want to (or can) pay for your medical bills or whether you want to receive full or partial coverage from a health insurance company.

You can also choose a health insurance plan just for one member of the family such as a son or a daughter. You should ask yourself how often you seek medical attention and how big your monthly spending is. Ask yourself: should I buy heatlh insurance? Will health insurance cover my needs? What benefits will I get with private health insurance? By asking these questions you will find out whether it is a good idea or not to buy health insurance.

How big should my coverage be?

Call or go to different insurance companies asking your questions. Request information about the professionals, hospitals and services that you will use under your policy. Ask where you should go visit a doctor, whether there are clinics covered by the policy that are close to your place of residence and whether your medicine is covered. It is also important to ask what happens if you become pregnant: will the health insurance policy cover the costs of childbirth and postpartum? What are the waiting periods for each of these different services? Ask your relatives or friends whether they have health insurance and how happy or dissatisfied they are with the services.

Read the small print

Insurance companies do not always provide all the information about the restrictions or limitations of their policies. It is important to take time to carefully read the contract or policy without skipping the fine print. It is in the small print where you will find the information about services or treatments that are excluded from your policy. The limitations vary from one insurer or another.

What benefits do I get with private health insurance?

When you go to a public hospital you need to wait and stand in line. When you have private coverage you do not have to stand in line and you can choose the doctor of your preference. You may also visit a specialist without having to go to a general practitioner first. If your plan allows it, you will be able to choose the clinic or hospital where you want to be treated.

Additionally, in case of hospitalization you will be given a room just for you. Your health insurance plan may also cover a second opinion if you did not trust the first doctor that treated you. In some cases, treatment abroad may be covered.
