Home Furnishings the Environmentally-Friendly Way

By John McElborough

It seems like everyone is concerned about the fate of the planet, striving to lead a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. One great way to do this is within the home, and manufacturers have started producing eco-friendly products which can reduce the environmental impact on the planet and those who inhabit the space.

It was once hard to find eco-friendly furniture, but today customers are asking for it and manufacturers are responding. Whether you want chairs, beds or dining room tables, there is a diverse selection of different environmentally-friendly furniture pieces available even within modest budgets.

In the past eco-friendly furniture has tended to consist of re-claimed materials, shoddy bamboo constructions or imaginative recycling, but now consumers are beginning to become able to purchase eco-friendly furniture which is as classy and aesthetically pleasing as any conventional furniture.

These days decorating your home in an eco-friendly way doesn't mean compromising on style. Furniture companies are producing eco-friendly furniture which isn't plain, boring or ugly. You can find all the stylish, fun and creative furniture you can expect but from an environmentally-sensitive manufacturer.

But what does eco-friendly furniture really mean? At the end of the day it is up to you, whether your prime concern is the health of those within the home, or the people who produce the product, or where the raw materials are sourced from, or how those materials are treated and processed. When it comes to environmentally-friendliness, there are many facets to consider.

Green items of furniture can consist of partially or totally recycled materials, and often being eco-friendly can mean using stains, paints or finishes that have entirely natural and non-toxic recipes.

Eco-friendly wooden furniture will generally be made from re-claimed wood, or if not it will be from forest-certified woods (from forests which are harvested in a sustainable and responsible way). Some wooden eco-furniture is in fact not made from wood at all, but from a composite of recycled materials or bamboo.

With all the options available to you, there's no excuse to not find eco-friendly furniture which suits your lifestyle and fits right into your home. You don't need to feel guilty for having a stylishly decorated home, now you can feel free to make your space looks great and still not have ethical concerns. Increasingly eco-friendly furniture doesn't have to leave a gaping hole in the wallet.

Whether you're looking for a complete redecoration and re-fit, or just an item of furniture or two, eco-furniture is here to stay.
