It is a one-of-a-kind highway corridor that traverses between Nebraska's Panhandle and The Black Hills in South Dakota. Aside from being a great place to camp, Fossil Freeway is also an ideal place where you and your loved ones can get in touch with a piece of history, since the area is literally specked with fossils, hence the name.
Another place worth camping at is the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. Aside from the majestic scenes, the place is also filled with history. The place and the surrounding areas are the former lands of the Lakota Indians, a great tribe of Native Americans. The Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is also where early trading routes were created.
Camping near a river is a great idea. If you are thinking about it, the head to the Niobrara National Scenic River. If you still want some camping action near a lake, then you can still go to the Cottonwood Campground. The camp site is situated east of Lewis and Clark Lake, below the dam, and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District. Due west of the camping ground is Lake Yankton, a small lake below Gavin's Point Dam.
