Finding A Home Business Opportunity Without The Hype

By Gregory McGuire

How many times has the "Greatest Home Business Opportunity Ever!" turned out to be a dud?

If you're like me, the answer is more than a few. It would be fantastic if every ad you saw about a home business opportunity lived up to its claims, but you and I both know that's far from the case. Sadly, most of what you find on the internet is pure fluff. At worst, malicious lies.

So what's a genuine, home business opportunity seeker to do? The first thing I do when examining a potential new business is hit the forums.

Ask others for their experiences with this company. Most are very quick to tell you if it's legitimate. Many times I had my credit card out, ready to join, until I found a forum thread where several posters were scammed. It's safe to say that these work from home forums have saved me a ton of cash over the years.

I've also learned from companies that were legitimate, but I still didn't get the support I needed. One network marketing company I was with cost me over $5000. My upline told me that was the amount of product I needed to purchase before the company would take me seriously and offer any real help. After the funds left my bank, I never heard from my upline again.

Yes, I was angry, depressed, and filled with all the emotions you could imagine after something like that happens to you. But, if you're clever, you learn.

If you're looking for a home business opportunity that's primarily a network marketing company, you'll want to ask your upline a lot of questions before signing on the dotted line. For instance:

- How are you going to teach me to succeed?
- How large is your own downline?
- How many people in your downline are succeeding?

If he hems and haws and doesn't give you a direct answer, you might want to move on. You want an upline who knows what she's doing, and can teach you to do the same. Network marketing is difficult enough without suffering through "the blind leading the blind" syndrome.

Finally, don't fall in love with any company. After all, this is business. And if you get too emotional when looking for a home business opportunity, there's a good chance you'll get scammed. This is definitely a time to follow your head over your heart.
