Whether it's for early retirement, a job change or simply an escape, moving abroad can be stressful and challenging. There are a million-and-one things to remember and sometimes it can feel like moving abroad is one of the most difficult things you can do. Here are a few tips to try to make your move to France a little smoother.
Passports
Because you are moving inside the European Union, you don't need to worry about passports or visas at all!
One of the most important elements is passports; ensure that you and your accompanying family have fully valid and up to date passports. You will also need visas and permission in place, so make sure that you fully investigate the requirements before you make a move.
Residence Status
One important part of moving to France is relinquishing residence in your old country and establishing residency in France. The taxman should be informed of your departure, and of your arrival. Ensure you are aware of all the formalities related to changing residency or you could be hit with irritating and potentially financially-crippling fines.
Connection
Be sure to organise utilities companies to disconnect all your appliances when you leave home, and another to connect them up in your new home. The more notice you can give the utilities companies, the smoother this part of the move is likely to go.
Packing
It can be good to remember that the more items you plan to take with you, the more it will cost to transport. Be ruthless when packing personal possessions; do you really need it?
If you're moving a long way sometimes it can take a while for things to be delivered, so sometimes it is advisable to take some important items with you personally. Remember that you'll start accumulating junk again once you arrive, so use the move as an opportunity to lighten the load and get rid of old, unwanted possessions.
Medical
Before you leave your current home, inform your doctor and dentists of the move, and try to obtain copies of your records to take with you, as this could become a difficult task once you arrive, and it is important that your doctor should know your medical history.
Post
It is relatively easy to get mail redirected from your UK address to your new one, with Royal Mail's Re-Direction Service, available for a small charge from any post office.
Most importantly, remember to relax and don't get too stressed about the move. Although it can be taxing, you will pull it off eventually. The worst that can happen is that you end up without electricity or your belongings for a couple of days. Try to smile and look on the bright side, and get excited about your new life.
