How to Save Money While Increasing Your Chances of Winning the Lottery

There are numerous lottery strategies used by serious lottery players to improve their chances of winning the lottery. I've discussed many of them in other articles and on my Lotto Blog. Some of these lottery strategies actually provide the lottery player with the same odds but at a lower cost. And, other lottery strategies can improve a player's chances of winning the lottery jackpot while staying within the lottery player's budget.

A full discussion of these lottery strategies would easily require several chapters in a book. So, for the purposes of this article, I'll discuss the simplest form of these lottery strategies as an eye opener. In the examples that follow, the last 371 drawings of the Florida Lotto are used, with the last drawing occurring on 7/22/09. In the Florida Lotto, six numbers are drawn out of fifty three.

Florida Lottery Statistics

Let's look at the simplest form of this lottery strategy; how many odd numbers are there per wager. When looking for the number of odd numbers per wager, there are only seven possibilities. A given wager will have 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 odd numbers. The opposite is also true. A wager that has no odd numbers in it has 6 even numbers in it. Now, for the FL653 lottery, there are a total of 22,957,480 possible wagers. Here is the breakdown of how many possible wagers exist with a given number of odd numbers. There are:

230,230 wagers with 0 odd #'s or 1.00% of all possible wagers
1,776,060 wagers with 1 odd # or 7.74% of all possible wagers
5,247,450 wagers with 2 odd #'s or 22.86% of all possible wagers
7,605,000 wagers with 3 odd #'s or 33.13% of all possible wagers
5,703,750 wagers with 4 odd #'s or 24.84% of all possible wagers
2,098,980 wagers with 5 odd #'s or 9.14% of all possible wagers
296,010 wagers with 6 odd #'s or 1.29% of all possible wagers

This listing of lottery statistics tells the story. If you have been follow the Florida Lotto closely (any lottery for that matter), you know that the lottery jackpot rarely contains zero odd numbers (all even numbers). In fact, in the FL653 lottery this has only happened 4 times in 371 drawings. The above table predicts as much. It shows that only 1.00% of all possible wagers have 0 odd numbers. Another way to look at this is that this should happen on the average of once every 100 drawings.

Let's look at the opposite end of this table. It can also be said that having a lottery jackpot containing 6 odd numbers is very rare. This has happened only 4 times in 371 drawings. It is worth noting here that it should happen more often than zero odd numbers does, because it's percentage is higher; 1.29%. Why is that? Because, there are more odd numbers than even numbers from which to choose; 27 odd numbers and 26 even numbers. Therefore, odd numbers have a slight statistical advantage. Based on1.29%, this should happen on the average of once every 78 drawings.

Spending Less

The question is, 'How does this help me spend less?' Very simple. Assume your lottery budget is $50 per drawing and you purchase $1 wagers. You proceed to generate your 50 wagers but you remove any wager that contains all odd or all even numbers. This removes, for example, 3 wagers. Therefore, you spend $47 dollars instead of $50 saving $3. Some of you are about ready to explode about now, saying that if the lottery jackpot winners are all odd or all even, then I'd be wrong. And, you are absolutely correct! But, my friend, that only happens about once every 100 (78) drawings. As for myself, I prefer to save money on 99 (77) drawings only to be wrong once.

Improving Your Chances

You can use a variation of this same lottery strategy to improve your chances of winning the lottery jackpot. It's actually very simple. Instead of pocketing the $3 mentioned in the previous paragraph, buy three more lottery tickets. Effectively, what you have done is concentrate your entire budget on wagers that make good sense, giving yourself a slight advantage. You've taken your fishing line out of a mud puddle and put it back in the lake where the big fish are. You may not win the big one, but you've now got three more lines in the water.

Paying Attention

Now, do serious lottery players always play this way? No. Once in a while, by paying attention, they notice little things that their lottery software brings to light, called opportunities. They may notice an opportunity that might just reap big payoffs. There is such an opportunity in the FL653 lottery. Wagers with all odd numbers should occur on the average of every 78 drawings. But, in the Florida Lotto this event hasn't happened in 249 drawings. Can anyone say 'Overdue'?

How does a serious lottery player take advantage of something like this? Every player would approach the question a little differently, but here is an example of a typical response. First, the player would not abandon his normal lottery strategy. In fact, he would still apply most of his lottery budget to that strategy. But, he would take a portion of his budget, say $10, and purchase wagers with all odd numbers. If this event occurs in the next drawing, then the players odds of winning the lottery jackpot will be 10:296,010 or 1:29,601. He just improved his chances of winning by a factor of 77,533!
