Choosing a Data Recovery Company

By Walter Coyote
Aug 20, 2009
When you choose a data recovery company, you are weighing the risks of lost data with the costs of secure data. You'll need to assess your needs in terms of what each data recovery company will charge for software, services, and products.

Find out whether the company offers physical and logistical data recovery and what software is used for those purposed. Another question is whether the company provides online and off site data backup systems. Data backup is very important since 100% recovery is not possible.

The data backup capabilities of the company are also important to consider. Some companies have only online backup or only off site backup. If you want to be sure your data is secure, you will want both online and off site backup. Backup is so important because it is not possible to do 100% data recovery no matter what a company may tell you. Data recovery is most likely to be in the 60 to 75 % range even with the best data recovery company.

If you have lost data due to a mechanical problem then you should use a company that replaces parts. Your drive may be making funny noises, clicking, or not spinning then you will likely need to replace a part if no the whole drive. See what pats of the drive can be replaced or if you need to use a different company.

If you do not have a warranty on the computer or hard drive anymore, the main consideration will be the company's capability to fix problems in an efficient and cost-effective way. You will need to know about the technical staff's capabilities to make repairs. You don't want to wait until mechanical problems occur to find out about data recovery company's ability to fix mechanical problems.

Remember that your initial assessment will be a broad range quote. Try to narrow the quote down as closely as you can. It is possible for the company to determine the cause of the failure with only a few simple tests and they should pass this information onto you. Also take a close look at free assessments, as there may be clauses that state only specific cases are free.

You should have a clause in your contract that specifies that the company may not undertake tasks unless they are specified in the contract. You do not want a situation where the company does work you did not agree to and then demands payment. Otherwise, the company may charge you for bells and whistles that are not needed and you don't want.

When data needs to be recovered, you don't want to be negotiating the costs and services in the middle of the crisis. If you are careful in selecting a data recovery company, you will be more likely to get services that are efficient and cost effective.
